A cob or earthen oven is used to roast or bake bread, pizza, pie, meats and vegetables.

First, a fire is built inside the oven, heating the masonry. In a few hours when the oven is thoroughly heated, the coals are removed or pushed to

the back, and the food is placed in the oven. The stored heat radiates back into the food. Earthen ovens offer elegant, low-cost, do-it-yourself solutions for cooking.

Discuss design principles, material selection, working with cob, preparation and construction in this hands-on workshop.

“Building and baking in a wood-fired earthen oven restores beauty, savor, and real bread by restoring the essentials: earth, water, air, and fire.”
